What to Do if Your License Plates Get Stolen

Whens the last time you checked if your license plates were still on your car? It’s hard to believe, but license plates can often get stolen or lost in BC without us knowing it! Before someone goes and commits a crime using the plates stolen from your vehicle, here is what you should do to protect yourself.

First, make it a habit to glance at your plates everyday when you get home from work and also when you leave for work in the morning. It only takes a minute for your plates to dissapear, so it could happen while your car is parked in the lot at work or in the driveway at home.

If your plates do happen to get stolen in BC, the first thing you should do is file a police report. If someone uses your plates to commit a crime, it can turn into a lot of hassle for you unless you report it. All you have to do is call the RCMP non-emergency line. They will ask you a few questions about your vehicle and when the plates went missing and give you a police case no. The whole process only takes about 5 minutes. If you live in Surrey, the RCMP non-emergency number to call is 604-599-0502.

Once you have the case number, you will need to go into your local Autoplan broker with an ID and your insurance paperwork. Also, if only 1 of your plates were stolen make sure to take the remaining plate with you so that they can send it back to ICBC. Your Autoplan broker will issue you new plates with a new decal, which will cost $18. They will also print out new paperwork for you to sign and keep in your vehicle.

Having your plates stolen can be an unpleasant experience, but not as unpleasant as getting pulled over by a police officer and ticketed. So make sure to keep an eye on your plates, and if they do go missing simply follow the above steps and you will be good to go!
